LESBOS East - Papados

Papados is nestled among huge olive trees, in the south-western part the Gulf of Gera, 23.9 km from the town Mytilene. Its name comes from the word “papas” meaning “priest”. The priests were the first settlers in the village in 1838 when the Church dedicated to Taxiarches was built.

Today, the village still preserves a large part of its traditional architecture.

The church of Taxiarches and the ruins of the medieval fortress of Kastreli are two of its sights worth visiting. A tunnel in the fortress is believed to have connected it to the fortress of Mesagros, called “Paliokastro”.

Papados is famous for the customs, related to the traditional marriage, which used to last for a whole week. The preparations start on Monday and culminate on Sunday when the main wedding ceremony is held
