LESBOS South - Vrisa

The village of Vrisa is located halfway between Polichnitos and Vatera  ( app. 4 km distance at either direction ) and the famous Vatera beach ( also app. 4 km to the coast). With its traditional village square and narrow kalderimi streets it is an authentic picturesque Greek village with a close knit community that is keeping traditions alive with aplomb. but its open and welcoming to all visitors.

In the village there are two churches: The Living Fountain Church with the amazing wood carved temple & the Church of St. Constantine & St. Helen next to the Museum with the silver dome. You can also find there a primary school, grocery stores, kafeneia ( very good at serving ouzo with meze) , a bakery that you know streets away from the wonderful smell of freshly baked bread and cakes and two petrol stations. There are daily bus connections to Polichnitos and Mytilini also to Vatera most of the year.

In resent years it was discovered that the area of Vatera and Vrisa is also unique for a special reason. Through recovery excavations exceptionally rare Palaeolithic fossils  ( carbon dated to be 2 million years old ) of  fauna and flora were discovered. These are unique not only to Greece but also perhaps to the whole of Europe. Some of these findings are exhibited and can be seen at The Natural History Museum next door to the Church of St. Constantine & St. Helen.

The ancient village of Vrisa is believed to have been located south west of the present village, after you cross the bridge that links Vatera and Agios Focas and roughly where the little church of St. Ekaterini presently stands.

The village of Vrissa was destroyed by about 85% by an eathquake of 6.3 on the Rixter scale on the 12th of June 2017.  Only some 100 houses remain habitable at the high outskirts of the village. Now its the time to rebuild. How the new village will look and how soon it will be rebuild , no one knows....We will be informing you of developments as they happen.
