LESBOS South - Vatera

Vatera, located on the south coast of Lesvos 52 km away from Mytilini , and looking out to the Aegean Sea started life as a summer coastal settlement for the people of Vrisa and a place for fishing, agricultural and light industrial activities. Once upon a time it even had its own Customs House, a fine stone building, now sadly demolished. About 20 years ago the wonderful beach (10 km long, 40 feet wide), claimed to be the best in Lesvos was “discovered” , a  European Blue Flag became a feather in its cap and the rest is history as they say. The wide and peaceful bay with the crystal clear waters and the  horizon of endless blue that is fronting it, never fails to captivate every visitor.Seaview vista

In the space of these 25 years Vatera has evolved into a hamlet in its own right and a very versatile resort all year around. During the winter months app. 150 people live in Vatera, enjoying the peace and tranquillity. It can accommodate divergent visitor requirements and can effectively be most things to most people all year around.

Plentiful quality tourist accommodation: rooms, studios, apartments, hotels, shops, car hire as well as tavernas, restaurants, cafeterias and bars can be found along the stretch of this magnificent beach making it an ideal destination for summer holidays. In the winter time most of the tourism business close but there is enough things going on for the people that live in Vatera all year around ( e.g. myself & my husband )

There are many country walks that can be enjoyed in the surrounding countryside and villages while you discover nature (wild flowers, orchids, butterflies etc) at its best not to mention a visit to the Temple of Dionysus , the Achilles well and Paliopyrgos ( old Castle). Details of these walks and locations are included in the Walks Guide “Vatera Around & About”, which you can buy at/from  Madonna Studios ( www.vatera-lesvos.co.uk ) to walk independently.Vatera beach
