LESBOS East - Mesargos

Mesargos is one of the six villages of Gera ( Palaiokipos, Papados, Perama, Skopelos, Plakados ) , an area characterized by the green rolling hills and silver olive groves. The area apart from its natural beauty it has a great historical and cultural importance.

This area around the Gulf of Gera has been inhabited since the 3rd millennium B. C. It is maybe in this area that was situated the mythic Iera, which, according to Plinius, was the second important town of the Aeolian Lesvos. Ruins of ancient towns have been discovered all along the seashore of the gulf from the area of Chalakies to its entrance.

The locals are mainly occupied in the cultivation of the olive-trees, the fishing and the development of tourism. The climate is quite healthy since the winters are mild and summers relatively cool thanks to the local winds ( “meltemia” ) that are common in the area.
